Gershwin, George. (1898–1937) [Whiteman, Paul. (1890–1967)]. Gershwin Memorial Program conducted by Paul Whiteman . Lewisohn Stadium 1930s All-Gershwin-concert program magazine: Stadium Concerts Review. Rare program from the memorial concert one year after the composer's death; directed by Paul Whiteman, July 11, 12, 13, 1938. Clean and crisp, fine, just a hint of a fold and small stain lower left on the front cover. Gershwin’s Second Rhapsody is titled here by Whiteman “Second Rhapsody in Blue.” 9 x 6 inches (24 x 16 cm.). Rare.

As the leader of one of the most popular dance bands in the United States during the 1920's and 1930's, Whiteman produced recordings that were immensely successful, and press notices often referred to him as the "King of Jazz". Using a large ensemble and exploring many styles of music, Whiteman is perhaps best known for his blending of symphonic music and jazz, as typified by his 1924 commissioning and debut of George Gershwin's jazz-influenced Rhapsody in Blue.
