Batta, Alexandre. (1816-1902). Collection of Autograph Letters. Rare collection of 4 autograph letters from the important Belgian cellist and composer. To his friend, Emile Renaud (organist of the palace chapel, Versailles). Together with a postcard portrait, a reproduction of the 1855 Batta portrait by Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier. All in very fine condition, as follows:

4 pp. 11 X 18 cm. 08/11/1885. Addressed "Mon bon ami," a long and intimate letter regarding travels, health, music, concerts etc.

3 pp. 11 X 18 cm. [nd] Addressed "Cher et excellent ami," a warm and intimate letter of thanks for a gift of "suculent abricots," noting however, that he remains in the same poor health, discussing his condition and other matters.

2 pp. 11 X 18 cm. [nd] On black-bordered mouring stationary, addressed "Mon Cher Ami," a resigned letter about the death of a mutual friend, remarking on "ce noble coeur, cette admirable nature, cette belle ami," and lamenting his own sorrow, pain, poor physical and moral condition.

4 pp. 11 X 18 cm. 08/14/1895. Addressed "Mon Cher ami," a long and intimate letter regarding travels, the marriage of a friend, mentioning Dumas and other matters.

A student of Platel in Brussels, Alexandre Batta later settled in Paris (1835) and made many successful concert tours throughout Europe. A regular chamber music partner of Liszt and an intimate of Berlioz, he wrote many original works and fanciful transcriptions for cello and piano. Though not as well remembered as his friend and fellow Platel student, Francois Servais, he was an important cellist during his lifetime.
