Poleri, David. (1921-1967). Signed Program. A scarce signed program from the superb American spinto tenor who died young in a tragic helicopter crash. He has signed "Don David / David Poleri," presumably a reference to the aria from Mozart's "Don Giovanni" that appears on the recital program. A few great recordings remain, including a fantastic Don Alvaro in a "Forza" with Fritz Busch.
"In 1949 he made his operatic début in the title role of Faust in Chicago with Fortune Gallo’s touring San Carlo Opera. He sang with the New York City Opera (Alfredo and Massenet’s Des Grieux, both 1951) and with other leading opera companies in the USA. He sang Don Alvaro (La forza del destino), with Glyndebourne Opera at Edinburgh in 1951, returning in 1955. At Florence (1953–4) he sang Hermann in The Queen of Spades and Andrey in Mazepa, and later he appeared at Perugia and Genoa. In 1954 he created the role of Michele in Menotti’s The Saint of Bleecker Street in New York, and then sang the role in the Italian première at La Scala; he appeared as Prince Troilus in the Italian première of Troilus and Cressida in 1956, the year of his Covent Garden début as Riccardo. With the Chicago Lyric Opera (1961–2) he sang Don Alvaro and Vladimir Igorevich (Prince Igor). A pioneer in televised opera, in 1955 he sang Cavaradossi for NBC television. Poleri had a strong, ringing voice and a fine stage presence." (Grove Opera)
