Scribe, Eugene. (1791-1861). Two Autograph Letters to Ambroise Thomas regarding "Le Comte de Carmagnola.". An important set of letters, including lengthy passages of manuscript libretto text. 1 page 8vo; 2 pp. 8vo. The second letter, including portions in another hand, with approximately half of the text in the hand of Scribe, who adds rhyming lines to an extant text.
"Voici, mon cher ami, ce que je vous ai promis.
1° Sur le vers de la cavatine de Stenio
que sur moi la tempête
éclate en sa fureur
je lui livre ma tête
et l'attends sans frayeur
2° la Strette du Duc
Nizza
plut au ciel
Stenio
et pourquoi ?
Nizza
je pourrais être à vous
Stenio (Chaudement)
Ah ! pour moi quelle ivresse
sans grandeur, sans richesse
quoi ! j'obtiendrais encor
son amour, sa tendresse !
toi dont la voix console
merci, mas douce idole !
Vienne à présent la mort
je bénirai mon sort
Nizza
riche ou dans la détresse
sans grandeur, sans noblesse
pour vous ??? encor
mes serments de tendresse
(avec force)
espoir qui me console
pour lui seul je m'immole
oui jusques à la mort
toujours le même sort"
"Dans le chant du Condottiere
Nizza
o toi qui voit ma peine extrême
o dieu puissant sauve le du trépas
Stenio
???? moi celle que j'aime
je fus hélas trompé moi même
o dieu puissant je trouve le trépas
messieurs, messieurs sauvez moi du trépas
Condottiere
notre chef ! notre chef ! tu nous le rendras
oui réponds, oui réponds ! ou tu ????
crains notre vengeance et nos bras
Voici l'instant - o dieu propice
prenez, prenez pitié de nous
??? pour nous tes couronnes"
The opera "Le Comte de Carmagnola" was first performed at the Opéra de Paris on April 19, 1841.
From the imortant French playwright and librettist who collaborated with nearly every major opera composer of his time in both France and Italy. His libretti were set by Verdi, Bellini, Auber, Halevy, Boieldieu, Donizetti, Rossini and Meyerbeer, for whom he was working on L'Africaine at the time of his death. Though Scribe wrote many important libretti, it may be argued that La Muette was his most important contribution, as many of its elements - the 5-act structure, the obligatory ballet sequence, the use of spectacular stage effects, the focus on romantic passions against a background of historical troubles - became standard features of the form after their introduction there.
