[Visual Arts] Warhol, Andy. (1928–1987). Holy Cats by Andy Warhol's Mother . [1954]. First edition, sole printing. Twenty photo-lithographs, each an image of a cat and corresponding calligraphic text, complete as issued, from the very limited and sole edition of probably no more than 100 copies. All in good condition, consisting of 10 sheets working as bifolia, printed variously on colored wove paper with the watermark of "Town Crier Text" and colored gloss surface-paper. One of two books produced by Warhol in or around 1954, each produced in very small numbers, a rare copy of this famous collaboration between Andy Warhol and his mother Juila Warhola who was know for her quirky illustrations and calligraphy.



8vo. An unbound copy which appears to have never been stitched through, the bifolia having no holes in the middle. Outer wrapper (first bifolia) with some toning around the edges, splitting along the spine, collector's inventory number written in ink on verso. The remaining 9 sheets in remarkably fresh and clean condition.



"Julia (Andy's mother) moved to New York City in 1952 to be with Andy. She continued her singing and drawing through the Fifties and Sixties. Andy admired her abilities and used her penmanship often. Her decorative handwriting would often accompany his illustrations. She won awards for her lettering...In 1957 she illustrated a small book called Holy Cats. It featured what she loved to draw most, angels and cats." (Warhola.com)
