[Cahll] [Gautier] Ca. 1800. Between Life and Death.
Striking stipple engraving, depicting Death as a crowned skeleton with wings and tail, attacking a woman in an airborne battle. Death points a spear at her as she pushes him away, a hound of Hell barking at their feet, while the woman grips the wrist of another crowned and winged figure, representing life, who brandishes a sword and pulls her from below. In an extensive search, we have been unable to positively identify either the artist of the original image (signed "Cahll") or the engraver (signed "Gautier"). Sight 6.75 x 9 inches (17 x 23 cm.), framed to 14.5 x 17 inches (37 x 43 cm.).
