[Violinist] Vieuxtemps, Henri. (1820-1881). Autograph Letter regarding his student Graff, the Devil's Trill and other matters. Autograph letter from the great violinist to a good friend ("cher et vénéré ami"). Avignon, 25 February, 1867. 4 pp. In French, thanking his friend for the organization of his "petite séance," speaking of his student Graff and of Messrs. Aubert and Taufenberger, indicating that he had chosen Graff for his second violin and making clear that this has caused some tentions ("je suis froissé de la prétention Auberts"). He continues at length on these matters, finally stating "Assez" and moving on to note, in another vein, that there are many piano accompaniments for The Devil's Trill [Tartini], but that the best one has been published in Frankfurt by André. He, however, will play the Sonata with a string trio accompaniment.

Vieuxtemps was one of the most imporant musicians of the 19th century. As one of the greatest of all violin virtuosos, he was compared to Paganini by both Schumann and Berlioz. As a composer, he was an important reformer of the concerto and in this regard, according to Grove, "can be compared to Liszt."
