From 1880 to1890 , Gudehaus was engaged at Dresden, making his début there as Lohengrin. He sang Parsifal at the second performance of the opera at Bayreuth (1882), returning there as Tristan (1886) and Walther (1888). In 1884 he appeared at Covent Garden, singing Walther, Tannhäuser and Tristan, and sang at the Royal Albert Hall in the first concert performance in England of Parsifal. He made his New York début at the Metropolitan in 1890 as Tannhäuser, also singing Lohengrin, Walther, Siegfried, Siegmund and Tristan. On his return to Europe he was engaged at the Berlin Royal Opera House, remaining there until his retirement in 1896. One of the second generation of Wagnerian heroic tenors, he was also much admired in the dramatic French repertory.
