Lauren "Betty" Bacall was a great friend of playwright Adolph Green and his wife, Tony Award–winning actress Phyllis Newman, and was a regular around the piano at their home. Bacall first met Green in 1969, when he and his writing partner Betty Comden were hired to write a new book for an in-development musical based on "The Wisdom of Eve," the short story that served as the basis for the 1950 film All About Eve. Applause, as the project was ultimately titled, opened on Broadway in 1970, with Bacall winning the Tony Award for Best Actress. In later years, Bacall was a regular contributor to "There's Nothing Like a Dame," the annual benefit presented by Broadway Cares in aid of what is now the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative of The Actor's Fund of America.
