[Violinist] Schradieck, Henry. (1846-1918). Signed Photograph. Large signed photograph of the German-born virtuoso violin teacher, composer, author of pedagogical material for the violin that is still commonly used today to teach fingering exercises and practical studies. An original photograph, 8 x 11 inches. Signed by the photographer l.r. in pencil and by the violinist in his late, somewhat shaky hand in ink, in the lower blank margin. In fine condition. Rare.
A child prodigy, he studied under Hubert Léonard in Brussels, and Ferdinand David in Leipzig, before becoming a soloist for Carl Martin Reinthaler's concerts in Bremen. He began his teaching career in Moscow in 1864, and four years later returned to Hamburg to conduct the Philharmonic Society. In 1874, he moved to Leipzig to serve as concertmaster with the Gewandhaus Orchestra and teach at the Leipzig Conservatory. In 1883, Schradieck accepted a position as Professor of violin at the College of Music of Cincinnati. He remained in Ohio until 1889, then returned to Hamburg to teach until 1898, when he relocated permanently to the United States, teaching at various appointments in Philadelphia and New York City until his death.
