Addressed to the German Jewish orchestral conductor Hermann Levi (1839 - 1900). Elegantly matted and framed with an original photograph to 12.25 x 17.25 inches.
"Lieber Freund, Ich weiß nicht, wohin mich einstens der Wind treibt, nun scheint aber: nicht erst, später(?). So schicke ich für alle Fälle die eine Decke(?) zurück, die ich unverantwortlich lange behalten - und noch schlimmer, vergessen hatte. Sei bestens gegrüßt u. grüße auch unsre Freunde und Freundinnen von Dein J. Brahms"
["Dear Friend, I don't know, where the wind will take me one day; but now it seems, not right away, but later(?). So, I am sending back to you the one piece [?] which I have kept irresponsibly long - and worse, had forgotten. Best regards, and regards also to our friends from your J. Brahms"]
Brahms had met Levi in Hamburg in 1862 and they developed a close friendship and had an extensive correspondence. Their friendship cooled significantly in the mid 1870s as Levi became increasingly involved with Wagner's music. The present letter is apparently unpublished and likely dates from before 1876.
