Rare sheet of paper signed by all four members of the Rosé Quartet with date (Antwerp, January 16, 1925) below, in the hand of Walter. Cut from a bifolium; possibly detached leaf from a program booklet (verso blank). 8.75 x 10.75 inches (22 x 27.5 cm). Browned and brittle with slight loss to outer corners and upper edge.
Founded in 1882, the Rosé Quartet was one of the outstanding ensembles of its kind during the early twentieth century. Except for Arnold Rosé himself, who was married to Gustav Mahler's sister Justine, its members changed over the years. The lineup signing here existed between 1921 and about 1930. Besides cultivating the canonical German-Austrian repertory, the Rosé Quartet premiered music by many contemporary composers, including Arnold Schoenberg (both string quartets and, with Franz Schmidt on the second cello, Transfigured Night), Anton von Webern, Franz Schmidt and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Based in Vienna and mostly consisting of Jewish musicians, the ensemble was forced to disband in 1938.
