Signed photograph of the important Hungarian violinist and pedagogue, inscribed to his student Jaroslav Siskovsky "in remembrance of his sojourn in Russia" and dated Christiania [Norway], July 20, 1917. Auer's summer masterclass took place in Christiania during the World War I years. Toning, some surface and edge wear, mount heavily toned. Overall very good. 6.75 x 8.75 inches (17 x 22 cm).

Leopold Auer spent nearly fifty years in St. Petersburg and exerted a decisive influence on the Russian violin school, following Vieuxtemps and Wieniawski as solo violin at the Imperial Ballet. Arensky, Glazunov, Taneyev and Tchaikovsky wrote their most important violin compositions for him. His many celebrated students included Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz, Toscha Seidel, Efrem Zimbalist, and Nathan Milstein.

From the collection of Czech-American violinist Jaroslav Siskovksy, a student of Leopold Auer who went on to be a founding member of the New York String Quartet, with Ottokar Čadek, Bedrich Váška and Ludvik Schwab.
