The important African-American dancer and choreographer's account of her anthropological research trip among the Maroon tribe of Accompang, Jamaica, signed and inscribed on the front endpaper to pianist and composer Hilda Davis, the sister-in-law of Pierre Monteux and wife of bandleader Meyer Davis. Dunham has boldly signed and inscribed: "To Hilda Davis / affection, admiration and appreciation for you and your wonderful family." Hardcover with original dust jacket; some tears to the dust jacket, otherwise in very good condition. 162 pp. 6.5 x 9.5 inches (16 x 24 cm). From the estate of Monteux's daughter, Nancie Monteux Barendse.
Although best known as founder and director of the dance company which bore her name and for her appearances in such films as Star Spangled Rhythm and Stormy Weather, Dunham was also a serious anthropologist of dance, partially completing a master's degree at the University of Chicago and winning research grants from the Rosenwald and Guggenheim foundations to study the dance forms of the Caribbean. Journey to Accompang was the result of living with the Maroon people for several months in the remote mountains of Haiti, in the hopes of witnessing a famous native African war dance.
