Inscribed, "To Paul + [crossed out] sorry / R Nureyev / 1971." 9.75 x 7.75 inches (25.4 x 20.2 cm). Copyright stamp to verso but without name of photographer printed. In fine condition, though it appears that Nureyev inscribed the photograph to Paul McMahon and somebody else, but then McMahon corrected him, prompting Nureyev to cross out the second name and add, "sorry."
Zoë Dominic was one of the outstanding group of dance and theatre photographers who flourished in the postwar renewal of the British performing arts in the 1950s and 60s. She was a pioneer in a man's world and her talent for capturing the essence of a performer endeared her to some of the greatest stars of the age and was the "chosen" photographer of Maria Callas, Rudolf Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn, Laurence Olivier and Maggie Smith.
From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
