Soon after, George Balanchine saw her in ballet class and engaged her for De Basil's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo as one of the three "Baby Ballerinas." Later, she was known as "The Black Pearl of the Russian Ballet" and created roles in works by Massine, Lifar and Balanchine. She also appeared in a number of films, including "Tonight We Sing," where she played Anna Pavlova.
