Striking signed hand-colored postcard photograph of the modern dance and theatrical lighting pioneer, shown in an elaborate costume decorated with butterflies. She has boldly signed and dated London, 1903. 9 x 13.5 cm. Small crease lower right corner, else fine. Scarce. 

The American dancer Loie Fuller found great success in late-nineteenth-century Paris, appearing at the Folies Bergère and other celebrated venues. Attracting the attention of many artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Chéret, and Rodin, she was frequently painted and became an important figure of the Art Nouveau. She was also a pioneer of modern theatrical lighting, holding several patents for technologies that created colored stage lights.
