King Jr., Martin Luther. (1929-1968) [Shahn, Ben. (1898 - 1969)]. TIME Magazine Cover - SIGNED. March 19, 1965 TIME cover.  Beginning in 1957, Dr. King appeared four times on the cover of Time magazine and as Time's Man of the Year in 1963. He is seen here in a stirring bust portrait by artist Ben Shahn, and has signed in the lower right corner in blue fountain pen ink. Worn with mailing folds and with two edge indentations at the left edge. Remnant of the mailing sticker at lower left. 8.25" x 11". 

Originally commissioned for this cover, Shahn’s portrait of King was then included as part of a portfolio of prints created for the American Civil Liberties Union, sold to raise funds for the civil rights movement.  Shortly after King’s death, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference also used the image for a limited edition print fundraising drive.
