Meyerbeer, Giacomo. (1791-1864). Three Rare Tissue Stereoviews of L'Africaine. Paris: Les Théatres de Paris, B.K. Edit. [ca.1865]. Rare tissue stereoview photographs, probably from the first production of Meyerbeer's final opera.  Included are the following cards: Acte I, Scene V (fine); Acte III, Scene VI (one break left side; else fine); Acte V, Scene I (fine).  Each 7 x 3.5 inches (17.8 x 8.9 cm.).

The opera, with a libretto by Eugene Scribe, was premiered at the Paris Opera on April 25th, 1865.  These images become three dimensional when viewed through a stereoscope, and were likely taken at the first production which featured Marie Sasse as Sélika.  The image from Act III shows the sinking of Don Pedro's ship, an effect which caused a great sensation at the time.
