[Visconti, Luchino. (1906–1976)]. "Don Carlos" - Two 1958 Covent Garden Centenary Production Programs. Two original programs from the celebrated Italian director's highly successful production of Verdi's Don Carlos at the Royal Opera House. Dated May 9 and May 15, 1958. The first date was the opening night, while the second date marked the one hundredth anniversary of the opening of the theatre at Covent Garden. The production, Visconti's first outside Italy, starred Jon Vickers and Boris Christoff. Each program 4 pp. Light foxing and some handwritten notes on one program; overall in fine condition. 8.5 x 12.5 inches (21.6 x 32 cm). Together with three contemporary press clippings reviewing the centenary production.

Visconti "approached opera only after considerable successful experience as a director and designer in the spoken theatre and as a film director[...] Visconti’s career in the opera house coincided with and fostered the renewed interest in neglected works by the leading 19th-century Italian composers. His profound love and knowledge of music, his visual taste, his familiarity with the styles of various periods, gave his finest productions an unrivalled authenticity. His influence on opera production in Italy and elsewhere was vast. Before him, most Italian opera houses were content with routine productions, in a tired tradition; with his insistence on the individual character of each work, he renewed, indeed revolutionized, the approach to opera staging." (William Weaver, New Grove Online.)
