du Pré, Jacqueline. (1945–1987). Schubert String Quintet in C Major, Op. 163 - Signed and Annotated Musical Score. London: Ernst Eulenburg [Boosey & Hawkes]. An extraordinary signed and annotated copy of the miniature score of the Schubert Cello Quintet from the powerful cellist who died so tragically young. This is the copy of the 14-year old Jacqueline Du Pré, with her ownership signature and the date "Christmas 1959" in blue ink on the front wrapper, and with her pencilled annotations in the second cello part on pp. 4, 9, 20, 25, 37, 38, 39, 40, 45, 46, 47, 55, 59, 63, 64, 64, 70, and 71.

Originally from the collection of Hilary du Pré, British flautist and memoirist best known for her co-authorship of the book A Genius in the Family and contributions to the film Hilary and Jackie, both of which relate the story of her sister. When her home at Church Farm, Ashmansworth was sold, older books and music were put into storage and subsequently sold to a Hampshire-based antiquarian generalist, thence to our consignor at the September 2019 York fair.

In a broadcast of March 21, 1977 du Pré Schubert identified the C Major Quintet as one of her desert island discs, in the recording by the Amadeus String Quartet with her 'cello daddy' William Pleeth playing the second cello part. At the time of the present ownership signature, she was studying with him. The British cellist achieved enduring mainstream popularity at a young age and is regarded as one of the greatest cellists of all time. Her career was cut short by multiple sclerosis, which forced her to stop performing at the age of 28. She battled the illness for a further 14 years until her death at the age of 42. Autograph material of any kind is uncommon, with all but signed programs or album sheets virtually unobtainable. A signed photograph of her was sold in 2014 for $7500 at auction and we are unaware of any other musical material such as the present score having appeared on the market.
