Paik, Nam June. (1932–2006) & Lee, Dr. Mathew H.M. (1931–2011). Pair of Signed Exhibition Posters. Two posters for the artist's 2000 exhibition, Thermography: The Philosophy of Heat / The Search for Pain / Dr. Mathew H.M. Lee and Nam June Paik, signed and dated in silver ink by both Paik and Dr. Mathew H. M. Lee, the neurologist who collaborated on the exhibit. Minor edge wear, overall in fine condition. Mounted to rigid styrofoam boards, each 24 x 36 inches (71 x 91 cm.).
A joint project with renowned neurologist Dr. Mathew H. M. Lee, Thermography is one of Paik's final works, following a severe stroke in 1996 that left him with limited mobility. He was inspired by the rehabilitation processes implemented by Dr. Lee, whose therapeutic sessions with Paik over the course of several months helped restore some of the artist's neurological functions. Thermography, which was a principal factor in Dr. Lee's rehabilitation medicine, is a photographic heat process that records the activity of the brain and neurological functions as a means of identifying problem areas.
Paik's artistic career was driven by his intuition and inventiveness, often employing technology and video objects to afford viewers space and time to reflect on the dialectics of art in the face of repressed mediation and governmental control. Paik's body of work is deeply embedded in a curiosity of human consciousness operating within a world subdued by media. A number of his projects and ideas proved incendiary, with intent to incite existential discomfort and introspection in his audiences. However, Thermography - in its context - illustrates an intimate exploration of the artist's own consciousness within the bounds of his physical limitations.
