Melba, Nellie. (1861-1931). Fan used in Barbiere. Highly decorated wood and paper fan belonging to Melba and used by her in the role of Rosina in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia. The fan shows a bull-fighting scene and is elaborately painted with vivid hot colours including much gold. The wood frame is also decorated in gold. One small split at bottom edge, otherwise in exceptionally nice condition.
PROVENANCE: two typed notes accompany the fan state: ‘Formerly the property of Dame Nellie Melba who presented it to George Clutsam from whence it reached the Stuart-Liff Collection. 1976. ‘This fan was used by the prima donna in the role of Rosina in Rossini’s opera “Il Barbiere di Siviglia.”’
George Clutsam (1866-1951) was Melba’s accompanist.
