Based on Nikolai Gogol's story "May Night, or the Drowned Maiden", Rimsky-Korsakow's "La Nuit de Mai" is an opera in three acts, four scenes with a libretto by the composer. It was first performed in St. Petersburg on 21 January (O.S. 9 January) 1880 at the Mariinsky Theatre and was conducted by Eduard Nápravník.
