[Barber, Samuel. (1910–1981)] Menotti, Gian Carlo. (1911–2007) & Schuman, William. (1910–1992) & Serkin, Rudolph. (1903–1991). Collection of Letters. A small collection of letters and clippings related to the important American composer and his collaborator and partner, Gian Carlo Menotti. A wonderful birthday letter from Menotti to Barber, on letterhead from their country home, Capricorn, is illustrated with hand drawn camels and a cat bringing Barber gifts and kisses: "I have never before in my life been quite as extravagant with either my greetings or my kisses - but I don't want to appear stingy for your birthday... they are my most precious kisses (and I am sure they'll fit you very nicely --)..." [2 pp., n.d.] In very fine condition.

Two later letters to Barber come from his old friends, fellow composer William Schuman, sending best wishes just before Barber's 70th birthday [1 p., March 7, 1980], and pianist Rudolf Serkin, who writes: "...even though the invisible ties of love and friendship are strong I long to see you...your old Mountain guide, Rudi," [1 p., April 28, 1980]. In fine condition.

Together with a letter from American poet Robert Horan ("Kinch") to Edith Evans Braun, sending best wishes on her birthday and dated August 3, 1947, as well as a further envelope addressed to Edith Braun, postmarked August 1947 from Capricorn. Braun was an accomplished pianist and patron of musicians including Barber and Menotti. Horan was a friend of the couple who lived with them at Capricorn in the 1940's. In very good condition.

Also included are three clippings from the Viennese newspapers Wiener Kurier, Die Presse and Neue Wiener Tageszeitung, covering Barber and Menotti's trip to Vienna for the Austrian premiere of Menotti's The Consul in February 1951. With an airmail envelope addressed to Edith Braun from Austria postmarked February 28, 1951. Barber and Menotti had spent a happy time with the Brauns in Vienna in 1934, and according to the clippings, was pleased to return. Clippings with rough edges, toning and folds.
