Herrando, José. (1680 - 1763) [Carmona, Manuel Salvador. (1734 - 1820)]. "Dominus Josephus Herrando." 1756 Portrait Engraving. Fine portrait engraving by Salvador Carmona after the portrait by Ludovico Velasquez, of the Spanish violinist and composer, author of  Arte y puntual explicación del modo de tocar el violín con perfección y facilidad (Art and timely explanation of how to play the violin with perfection and ease) published in Paris in 1756, and the first published attempt by a Spaniard at teaching this instrument. The present portrait was originally issued as the frontispiece to that historic volume. Beautifully set in a hand-painted French mat with silver detailing and framed in a gilted wood frame. 11 x 8.5 inches [29 x 22 cm]; overall 16 x 13.5 inches [41 x 34 cm]. Unexamined out of frame but in apparently fine condition, with a few small chips to the frame edges.
