Blake, Eubie. (1887 - 1983) . "I'm Just Wild About Harry" - Autograph Musical Manuscript. New York: M. Witmark & Sons. [1948]. Autograph musical manuscript in pencil, music and lyrics in the hand of Eubie Blake, seven pages on four sheets of music manuscript paper, 9.5 x 12.5, no date but marked on each page with Blake's 1959 registration with Local 802.  The first page is headed, "'I'm Just Wild About Harry,' The New Arrangement for Miss Swann, Words by Noble Sissle, Music by Eubie Blake." The lyrics, in part: "I'm just wild a-bout Har-ry— / And Har-ry's wild a-bout me— / The heav'n-ly bliss-es of his kiss-es / fill me with ec-sta-sy." On the front page, in ink, Blake apologizes: "Sorry about this number in lead powder." In fine condition. This manuscript was a gift from Blake to his close friend and protege, Jim Hession.

"I'm Just Wild About Harry" was the most popular number of the show "Shuffle Along," which was the first financially successful Broadway play to have African-American writers and an all African-American cast. The song broke what had been a taboo against musical and stage depictions of romantic love between African-Americans.  Originally written as a waltz, Blake rewrote the number as a foxtrot at the singer's request. The result was a simple, direct, joyous, and infectious tune enhanced onstage by improvisational dancing. In 1948 Harry S. Truman selected "I'm Just Wild About Harry" as his campaign song for the United States presidential election of 1948 and its success in politics led to a popular revival.
