The dedicatee of the work, Madame la Comtesse L. de Mercy-Argenteau (1837-1890), was a Belgian pianist who advocated for the music of The Mighty Handful, particularly Cui, and facilitated the production of his opera Prisoner of the Caucasus in 1886. She died the year before the present piece was published.
