Thiebaud, Wayne. (1920-2021). "For Tony, Summer, 1954”.
Lithograph in color on wove paper, signed, dated and numbered "11-17" in pencil by the artist.  Framed, in fine condition.  20.5 x 26.5 inches (52.1 x 67.3 cm.). A fine and scarce example of this early work.

Best known for his luscious paintings of pies, ice-cream cones and gumball machines, California artist Wayne Thiebaud was an avid and prolific draftsman from the moment he began his career as an illustrator and cartoonist.  Associated with Pop art because of his interest in objects of mass culture, he endows even the most banal, everyday scenes with a sense of poetry and nostalgia.  His early works, executed during the fifties and sixties, slightly predate the works of the classic pop artists like Warhol, Oldenburg and Lichtenstein, suggesting that Thiebaud may have had an influence on the movement.
