The first of two "cahiers," or "Hefte" (as described in headers of first pages of music). It contains three pieces. The second "cahier" I lacking. Browned and frayed to edges and gutter; some pages detached, else in good condition.

Perkins was a leading figure in Boston's arts scene from the 1850s to the 1880s. While better known for work in the visual arts and his writings on these, he was also an accomplished musician and won over the German publisher Breitkopf & Härtel to publish his chamber music, including the present collection, between 1853 and 1855. It was the first music by an American composer in the catalog of the illustrious company.
