ALS of the legendary German conductor, pianist and composer to Otto Lessmann.  In German.  Dated Bremen, March 25 [n.d.]. 2 pp.  Bülow updates his correspondent on his performing activity and writes (not without gossip and sneer) about the about the reception of some recent works and composers.  In part, translated (full translation below):  "I take license to submit the article on Proserpine [by Saint-Saëns] to your sense of judgment:  Ernst Wilhelm Fritzsch reports with chauvinistic triumphant gesture the alleged failure of that opera!  After all, we should not succumb to making those mistakes that we severely criticize in others... Bolko is outraged to insanity by his destruction even in Silesia by the Kalbeck Press of March 11, [18]87 (Vienna) – the most killing [literally, 'guillotinating'] and amusing dismissal imaginable that one can read.  Try to find the article."  Octavo; handsomely matted in black velvet and set into a carved gilt frame.  A beautiful presentation, ideal for display.

The content allows to date the letter to 1887.  Otto Lessmann (or Leßmann, 1844–1918), a critic and composer in Berlin, had once studied with Bülow.  Bolko von Hochberg (1843–1926), a count in Silesia, was active as a composer and theater director.  E.W. Fritzsch was a publisher of music and literature in Leipzig; his periodical was Musikalisches Wochenblatt.  Max Kalbeck (1850–1921), a critic based in Vienna, is now best remembered for his monumental monograph on Brahms.
