Welles, George Orson. (1915–1985). Signed Photograph in "The Third Man".
Original black and white film still, signed and inscribed by the American film director, writer, actor and producer widely acknowledged as one of the most accomplished dramatic artists of the 20th century. Welles is shown in the role of Harry Lime in the celebrated 1949 film noir The Third Man written by Graham Greene and directed by Carol Reed. 7.5 x 9.25 inches; 19 x 23.5 cm. 

Set in post-World War II Allied-occupied Vienna, the film centers on American writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), who arrives in the city to accept a job with his friend Harry Lime (Welles), only to learn that he has died. Martins stays in Vienna to investigate Lime's death, becoming infatuated with Lime's girlfriend Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli). In 1999, the British Film Institute voted The Third Man the greatest British film of all time and in 2011, a poll for Time Out ranked it the second-best British film ever.

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
