Anton Rubinstein, founder and first director of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, was 61 years old when he wrote the present inscription, but he looks younger on the photograph itself. Vasily Maksimovich Samus (1849–1903) was a well-known singer (baritone), actor and pedagogue in St. Petersburg. Rubinstein appointed him inspektor (supervisor) of the vocal classes of the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1889.
