Marinoff, Fania. (1890 - 1971). Rare Inscribed Photograph . A striking original 1916 photograph by Stephen Roach, showing the extraordinary Russian actress as Ariel in the Tempest. Boldly inscribed to the American dramatic critic and author, John Corbin (1870-1959) who directed Marinoff in the Tempest in a 1916 production with full text in the Elizabethan manner. Marinoff has inscribed and signed "in memory of Ariel in your all too brief and wonderful production of 'The Tempest.'" This photograph is from the collection of Broadway musical theater legend, Fred Ebb. 15 X 24.5 cm. One torn portion at bottom left, not affecting inscription or signature.

Marinoff was a Russian-born American actress who played supporting and lead roles in dozens of Broadway plays between 1903 and 1937, and eight U.S. silent movies between 1914 and 1917.

Born in Odessa, she came to the United States as a young child and joined a traveling play company around the age of fourteen. She married Carl Van Vechten in 1914. They had met two years earlier, and their marriage lasted over 50 years, even though Van Vechten was openly homosexual.
