[Surrealism] Lupino, Ida. (1918–1995) [Welbourne, Scotty. (1907-1979)]. "It Is Doubtful If Ida Lupino Can Explain Why a Hollywood Cameraman Took Her Picture Against a Surrealistic Backdrop" - Portrait Photograph. A most unusual portrait photograph by Scotty Welbourne of the actress and singer in front of an unsettling surreal backdrop prominently featuring a disembodied human eye. Newspaper clipping mounted to verso reads "It Is Doubtful If Ida Lupino, the Movie Star, Can Explain Why a Hollywood Cameraman Took Her Picture Against a Surrealistic Backdrop Made Up of Converging Lines and a Disembodied Over-sized Human Eye." There are several stamps to verso, including the date May 30, 1943, and stamps from Acme Newspapers and The American Weekly. Areas of overpainting, staple marks to corner margins, light rippling to upper edge, else in fine condition. 7 x 9 inches (17.8 x 22.9 cm.).
Scotty Welbourne replaced Elmer Fryer as department head at Warner Bros. in 1941, photographing many of the studio's newer stars.
