Hayward, Susan. (1917–1975). Press Photograph following 1955 suicide attempt. International News Photos photograph of the American actress in the hospital, following an apparent overdose of sleeping pills.  The typed press blurb affixed to verso reads in part, "Red-haired screen actress Susan Hayward is shown at North Hollywood Receiving Hospital, to which she was rushed today unconscious from an apparent overdose of sleeping pills.  The actress who divorced her husband, Jess Barker, in a bitter court battle last year and who failed in an apparent reconciliation attempt yesterday, was found sprawled on the living room floor of her lavish San Fernando Valley home.  Later the actress was removed to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital.  A nurse is shown standing by preparing the actress for stomach pump treatment. / D.4.26.55."  There is an additional Spanish-language press caption and three stamps to verso, including an INP photographer's stamp and two stamps from the archives of the Havana-based magazine Bohemia.  Light wear to edges, creases to lower right corner, overall in fine condition.  6 x 8.25 inches (15.2 x 21 cm.).

"By April 27 the East Coast was reporting on the suicide: how two detectives broke down the patio door and found Hayward unconscious in a housedress on the living room floor, how they decided an ambulance would take too long so they carried her to the squad car and took her to North Hollywood Receiving Hospital where her stomach was pumped, that [her] brother Wally said she was despondent over a 'tiff' with her ex-husband over paperwork."
