[Mahler, Gustav] Specht, Richard. (1870–1932) & Pollak, Egon. (1879–1933). Gustav Mahler. Fünfte bis achte Auflage - INSCRIBED BY EGON POLLAK. Berlin and Leipzig: : Schuster & Loeffler. [1918]. Fünfte bis achte Auflage; 5th to 8th edition.

The first important biography of Mahler (in German), first published in 1913, in its revised version, whose preface is dated Vienna, July 18, 1918. 296 pp. With inscription by Egon Pollak,"Herrn Dr. Goldschmitt meinem lieben Pflege- und Nährvater zur Erinnerung an die nächtlichen Störungen mit liebem herzlichen Danke. Egon Pollak. Hamburg, Aug. 1921" (To Dr. Goldschmitt, my dear foster father and breadwinner, reminding him of the nightly disturbances with a heartfelt Thank You. Egon Pollak. Hamburg, August 1921). Original boards and cloth spine. 9 x 6 inches (22.5 x 15 cm). Browned and very brittle. Otherwise in good condition.

Specht's Mahler biography appeared in many editions. The first four included illustrations and music examples, all of which were dropped from the fifth onwards. At the same time, as he explains in his new preface, Specht cut some passages on musicians at the Viennese Hofoper that were not directly related to Mahler and of limited relevance. Egon Pollak was a Czech conductor, music director of the opera house in Hamburg from 1917 to 1931, after which he took the helm at the Chicago Civic Opera in its then new theater. The company shut down just a few months later as a consequence of the Great Depression. Pollak returned to Europe. The identity of "Dr. Goldschmitt" is unknown.

From the collection of American composer George Perle.
