Full dark-green morocco by Rivière, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, the rear with the original title from the front cover. 9 5/8 x 8 3/8 inches (24.5 x 21 cm); [8], 75 pp. Light wear, with the bookplate of Frederick Locker-Lampson and sold together with an autograph letter on mourning stationery, quoting from Philippians IV:8 and signed "The Queen." Reference: "The Rowfant library: A catalogue" (B. Quaritch, 1886), p. 159 (recording both the volume and the letter).


Produced for the funeral of the Duchess of Kent, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1787 - 1861), mother of Queen Victoria, this is a remarkable signed presentation copy from the Queen herself, regnant of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837, and the first Empress of India of the British Raj from 1 May 1876, until her death. At 63 years and 7 months, her reign as the Queen lasted longer than that of any other British monarch, and is the longest of any female monarch in history. Her reign is known as the Victorian era, and was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military progress within the United Kingdom.
