Schlesinger / Columbus, Jan. 1917", inscribed beneath in pencil by him "For AMS Jr." to his son, who would go on to himself become the influential Pulitzer-prize winning American historian and social critic who served as special assistant and "court historian" to President Kennedy from 1961 to 1963. 

The American historian Arthur Meier Schlesinger Sr. taught at Harvard University, pioneering social history and urban history. He was a Progressive Era intellectual who stressed material causes (such as economic profit and conflict between businessmen and farmers) and downplayed ideology and values as motivations for historical actors.
