Aleichem, Sholem. (1859–1916). Original Photograph. Original photograph of the Yiddish author and playwright, ca. 1900. Written in pencil to the verso, a previous owner has amusingly identified him as "Jewish Mark Twain". In fine condition. 6 x 8.2 inches (15.2 x 20.6 cm.).
Born Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich, but best known by his pen name "Sholem Aleichem," Aleichem published an extensive body of work in English and Yiddish, including both his own writing and translations of many Russian authors. His short stories about Tevye the Dairyman formed the basis for Fiddler on the Roof, one of the most successful musicals in history.
