The Tender Land, Copland's second and final opera, was written on commission from Rodgers and Hammerstein for the thirtieth anniversary of the League of Composers. A small-scale work, it is written to a libretto by H. Everett [Erik Johns], after James Agee's "Let us now Prais Famous Men." It was first performed in two acts at the New York City Center of Music and Drama on April 1st, 1954. After mixed reviews, Copland extended it to three acts and it was premiered in that version on May 20th, 1955 in Oberlin, Ohio.
