[Literature & Art] [Wilde, Oscar. (1854–1900)]. 1882 Invitation to his Boston Lecture. [1882]. Scarce original invitation to one of Wilde's American lectures, in Boston on Jan. 31, 1882, where a few dozen Boston students, dressed like Wilde and carrying flowers, infiltrated the front rows of the audience as a joke. A little faded, but nicely framed in maroon silk, edged with gilded inner beading and outer frame which measures 9 x 8 inches.

Wilde first came to America on a lecture tour arranged by the English impresario, Richard d'Oyly Carte (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame), arriving on the SS Arizona on January 3rd, 1882. On a grueling schedule, Wilde lectured in a new town every few days and though the tour was originally planned to last four months, it was continued for over a year.
