Evans, Bill. (1929–1980) & Farmer, Art. (1928 - 1999). Modern Art - SIGNED LP COVER. New York: United Artists Records, Inc.. 1958. UAL-4007. LP cover of the legendary album of performances recorded and released in 1958, signed on the verso by trumpeter Art Farmer and on the front by the innovative jazz pianist Bill Evans, who adds the date of 1978. In fine condition, also with the record itself included, in apparently good condition.

The 1958 Down Beat review gave the album a maximum five stars. The Allmusic review stated: "Modern Art is the prelude recording for Art Farmer prior to his partnership in the Jazztet with Benny Golson, and also foreshadows the classy, tasteful inventiveness that group brought to the modern jazz world two years after this 1958 session... the Farmer-Golson combine proved to be a[n] important pairing beyond their initial partnership, with the seeds of that forest flower heard and enjoyed here". The Penguin Guide to Jazz described it as "one of Farmer's most successful records of the period", praising the contributions of pianist Bill Evans in particular.

Bill Evans worked briefly with Miles Davis before forming his own trio in the late 1950s. Evans’s influence as a keyboard artist has been acknowledged by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett. Plagued by a decades-long struggle with hepatitis and drug addition, Evans died at the age of 51 and autograph material is uncommon.

Largely overlooked during his formative years, Art Farmer's consistently inventive playing was more greatly appreciated as he continued to develop. Along with Clark Terry, Farmer helped to popularize the flugelhorn among brass players and his lyricism gave his bop-oriented style its own personality.
