[Gilbert, W.S. (1836-1911) & Sullivan, Arthur. (1842-1900)] . The Three Maids from The Mikado - Bisque Porcelain Figurine. A finely designed bisque porcelain figurine of the Three Maids, ca. 1885, measuring 18 cm high, the base 13.5 length x 5.25 width. Painted in pink, white, blue(s) and yellow. A few areas of handling wear and light staining, overall fine. The number 4775 inscribed in the rear base, the number 6 penned inside the lower inside rim. From the private collection of Ric Wilson, former curator of the Gilbert and Sullivan Collection at the Pierpont Morgan Library, NY.

We have been unable to identify the maker of this figurine, though we understand that it dates from the time of the original Mikdao production and was made in three sizes, this being the smallest. These originals are quite uncommon in any size, though rather less finely made reproductions were issued in the 1940s and turn up with some regularity.

The Mikado; or, The Town of Titipu is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert, their ninth of fourteen operatic collaborations. It opened on 14 March 1885, in London, where it ran at the Savoy Theatre for 672 performances, which was the second longest run for any work of musical theatre and one of the longest runs of any theatre piece up to that time. Before the end of 1885, it was estimated that, in Europe and America, at least 150 companies were producing the opera.
