Mahler, Gustav. (1860-1911). Autograph Signature . A full and bold autograph signature on a page with the notation of the Vienna Court Opera, "K. und K. Direction des K. K. Hofoperntheaters" in unidentified hand (ca. 8.3 x 4.8 inch), also signed by Felix Siegel (publishing house J. Schuberth, Leipzig) and August von Plappart, the Court Opera's Intendant at the "Imperial Theatre's Administration". Unusual.

This is the lower part of the final page of a contract of the Vienna Court Opera regarding the orchestra score, vocal scores and librettos for E.N. von Reznicek 's opera Donna Diana, the Viennese premiere of which Gustav Mahler himself conducted at the Vienna Court Opera on Dec.9, 1898. A center fold, else fine. Together with an attractive recently printed glossy photograph of the composer. Both very fine.

Mahler was very fond of Reznicek's opera and wrote to Guido Adler during preparation of the work that "because of its freshness the work is uncommonly attractive to me and I believe that it will have a great success." For his part, the composer himself ws very pleased with Mahler's work, writing in 1920 in the Mahler Heft of the Musikblatter des Anbruch: "The work was in every respect superbly prepared and the last rehearsals were as interesting as they were enjoyable. Mahler was a downright ideal conductor for composers. During the stage rehearsals, he turned to me a hundred times and asked me, 'Is that how it should be?' And whenever I replied 'Excellent, fantastic,' he was not at all pleased. 'You must say if it doesn't sound exactly as you conceived it,' etc. Indeed, he performed the miracle of making the whole work sound as though I had conducted it myself. Truly a wonderful quality in this rare man!"
