[Yiddish Sheet Music] Thomashefsky, Goldfaden, Zunzer, Rumshisky, Smulewitz, Secunda etc. . Yiddish Sheet Music Collection. . Rare collection of 17 pieces of late 19th and early 20th century Yiddish/ Jewish-American Sheet Music. Much of it issued by the Hebrew Publishing Co. and much of it from the vaudevilles and operettas of the Yiddish Theatre in New York's Lower East Side. From approximately 1870 onwards, Jews were emigrating to America in large numbers so that by 1900, nearly half a million European Jews had settled in North America, many in New York's Lower East Side. It was there that the Yiddish theatre emerged and "by 1910 there were thirteen theatres in the Lower East Side, most of them vaudeville houses." (Sapoznik, "Klezmer," p. 44). This collection includes works by some of the most significant composers of early Yiddish theatre, including Abraham Goldfaden, Joseph Rumshinsky, Arnold Perlmutter, Eliakum Zunser, Sholom Secunda and others. As follows:
