Album Amicorum from "El Retiro," the Santa Barbara residence of the wealthy socialites Pierre Clinch Merillon (1899–1991) and the Comtesse Michelle D'Oultremont (1904–1977) who were married in 1930 and whose home in Santa Barbara was a gathering place for luminaries living in or visiting CA. Red leather with gold embossed florets and "The Open Door" to front cover, entries dated 1941–1949 on twenty-four sides, including several drawings and numerous autographs and inscriptions. A page dated 1942 is signed by both Vera and Igor Stravinsky as well as Georgette and Arthur Sachs, among others. The following page includes signatures of Nadia Boulanger (22 Sept 1942), as well as by Rosamond and William K. Vanderbilt, among others. A boldly penned inscription from French poet, dramatist and diplomat Pierre Paul Claudel appears opposite a beautifully rendered watercolor of a flower by his wife Marion Cartier Claudel, daughter of Pierre Cartier of the three legendary Cartier brothers jewelry firm (signed "MC"). Other pages signed and inscribed by members of other wealthy and notable French families, including du Brissonay, Lalaing, Lustrac, as well as Hedwige Princesse de Bourbon, and many others. Split along upper left cover, else in fine condition. Approx. 5.5 x 7.75 inches (14 x 19.5 cm.).
