[Literature] Lamartine, Alphonse de. (1790 - 1869). Autograph Letter. ALS, signed "Lamartine." 16 July, 1839. Addressed to Mademoiselle [Chuhrsac]. Translated in part: "The beautiful verse and the sweet sentiments written by the hand of a poet and woman are too much for the spirit and the soul of a poet. I would say by way of response to your flattering questions, that I am not an angel, but that I have been touched by angels! There is nothing angelic on this earth, but for the voice and heart of a -- girl who finds poetry in herself and perfumes with it the things and men who she wishes to honor." Partial separation along one of several folds, light staining, else fine.

A scarce signed letter from the influential French author best known for his autobiographical poem “The Lake,” who also worked as a diplomat and politician in the Second Republic.
