Wheatley, Phillis. (c. 1753–1784). Lithograph Portrait. Attractive lithograph portrait engraving of the first published African-American poet. Printed by Lemercier, Bernard et cie, ca. 1834–1842, in the "Revue des Colonies," Paris. Some light toning, but overall in fine condition. 6 x 9 inches (15.5 x 23 cm).

This portrait is discussed in: Jennifer Harris, "Aprons and Pearls: Images of Phillis Wheatley" (Resources for American Literary Study, vol 34, 2009, pp. 33-45.) Harris notes that while there is no firm evidence that Wheatley sat for this portrait, its wide circulation as a portrait has made it a recognizable image of the poet.
