Original pen and ink, color pencil, crayon and collage full color poster art for the 1965 Walt Disney comedy That Darn Cat!, prominently featuring a picture of stars Hayley Mills, Dean Jones, Dorothy Provine, Roddy McDowal, Neville Brand and D.C.—the titular feline, with text "Follow that Cat! / He's an around, through, over and UNDERCOVER CAT" as well as hand-inked film details along the lower edge. Cut copyright 1965 Walt Disney Productions lower right to mount. Light toning to mount, overall fine. 17.5 x 23.5 inches. In a period frame, 20 x 26 inches overall. Together with an 11 x 17 reproduction of the final published poster version.
Directed by Robert Stevenson, That Darn Cat! was an adaptation of the 1963 novel Undercover Cat by Gordon and Mildred Gordon. A sequel was commissioned by Disney, but never made. A young woman suspects foul play when her cat comes home wearing a wristwatch. Convincing the FBI, though, and catching the bad guys is tougher than she imagined. With all its spirited hijinks and reliable Disney charm many regard the film as having the best feline performance of all time.
From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
